*Synopsis*
The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict over the border is a complex and multifaceted crisis creating insecurity in the region. Azerbaijan and Armenia, along with Georgia (Caucasus region), were part of the territorial integrity of Iran, which was separated two centuries ago due to the war imposed by the Russians and the Turkmenchay colonial treaty. These two states were part of this colonial empire until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Since 1992, following the occupation of the Nagorno-Karabakh region by Armenia and the declaration of its autonomy, the conflict has lasted for about six years and the outbreak of war that left 35,000 dead, and more than 800,000 people were displaced and Nagorno-Karabakh came under Armenian-backed separatist control.In recent bloody six-week war both countries accuse each other of launching border attacks. However, there are two other regional powers, Russia and Turkey, that have interfered in the conflict and the resolution effort. Finally, Russia’s president signed the peace deal at his residence on 9 November 2020. A peace agreement brokered by Moscow was signed by the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia.
