CASIS

Centre for Advanced Studies on Islam, Science and Civilisation (hereinafter referred to as CASIS), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) was established when the then Vice-Chancellor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Zaini bin Ujang invited Prof. Dr. Wan Mohd Nor Wan Daud to form the Centre. Prof. Dr. Wan Mohd Nor, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Zainiy Uthman and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Khalif Mu’ammar were the earliest staff at CASIS and they began its instruction on February 21, 2011.

CASIS seeks to promote advanced scholarship and learning for the advancement of knowledge in the field of studies relating to Islam, Science and Civilisation and their allied sciences under the ambit of the worldview of Islam in full cognisance of relevant developments in other civilisations, especially in the contemporary world, along with the educational philosophy and practice espoused by Tan Sri Professor Dr. Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas.

One of the Centre’s paramount objective is to train young scholars who are intellectually adept to delve into the intricacies of religious thought while simultaneously at home with intellectual and scientific ideas, technologies and socio-legal-economics thought and institutions of today. These emerging scholars will have the requisite intellectual tools and competent knowledge to imbibe from the multi-disciplinary program to prepare themselves for future intellectual civilisational challenges at home and the world at large.

What is CASIS FUND?

In order to sustain and maintain the continuity of high-quality Islamic education unique to our nation, CASIS welcomes all parties, corporate bodies and individuals to contribute generously to our Fund Raising drive. Since its inception, CASIS as a centre of excellence has strived in providing rigorous and intellectually challenging programmes to many good and intelligent students at a post-graduate level as a strategic initiative to revivify the Islamic civilisation in its full glory.

Why Contribute to CASIS?

Your assistance in the forms of dedicated zakat, wakaf, and sadaqah contributions will accelerate CASIS to become an excellent centre of scholarship and learning with the highest quality of intellectual and academic faculty, and an excellent library. A sound financial backing and outstanding facilities will empower the first-rate training of future minds from the Muslim World at large to become future bearers of the light of illumination of true knowledge following the footpath of learned scholars of the past.

In today’s academic practice, foundations, distinguished chairs and fellowships have been set up to accommodate able professors while monetary scholarships are made available to aid students in need. These facilities ensure the search for knowledge excels without financial hindrances. All contributions will be primarily used:

  2. to promote research and publication,
  3. to develop CASIS library,
  4. to fund scholarship for CASIS students,
  5. to conduct seminars and other academic endeavours.

Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas Chair of Islamic Thought

SMN Al-Attas Chair is a distinguished chair established at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s Centre for Advanced Studies on Islam, Science and Civilization. The Chair is named in honour of Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, world-renowned Malay thinker in the contemporary world. The Chair conducts, inter alia, CASIS Saturday Night Lecture Series, scholarly dialogues and seminars.

Research and Publication

As a centre of excellence, CASIS has published impactful books by prominent scholars in the field of Islam, history, science, and civilisation and will increase its number of publications in the future.

CASIS Library

The great Muslim libraries of the past fast eclipsed the libraries of Europe in the Middle Ages with their excellent handwritten sources and the sheer amount of resources available. Magnanimous patrons and benevolent donors supported all those who worked in this magnificent institution. In the same spirit, the Centre seeks generous philanthropists to financially contribute to assembling a credible library of major reference works to support the teaching and research work at the Centre.

Scholarship

A significant number of students who embark on this path of learning at this Centre hailed from a multiple less fortunate backgrounds, financially strained. Many are wayfarers (ibn sabīl) who left their hometowns, locally and abroad, to take residence here for an extended period away from the home comfort. They fall under the category of beneficiaries of zakat beneficiaries eligible for assistance in the form of money, foodstuffs, clothing, shelter, etc. Most importantly, the strive for highest educational excellence for the sake of comprehensive Muslims advancement is part of jihād fī sabīlillāh, and hence should be adequately supported by zakat, wakaf, sadaqah funds.
