The Academy of Islamic Civilisation began with the establishment of the Islamic Education Unit under the Centre for Humanities Studies in 1973, which was responsible for offering Islamic Education as one of the general subjects at UTM for all Muslim students.
In 1993, the Islamic Education Unit was converted into the Department of Islamic Studies under the Faculty of Management and Human Resource Development.
In 1995, the Department of Islamic Studies was merged with the UTM Community Unit and placed at the Sultan Ismail Mosque, which subsequently led to the establishment of the Centre for Islamic Studies and Social Development. In addition to offering university general courses, it also offered the Islamic Studies Certificate Programme.
Starting in 1998, in collaboration with the Faculty of Education at UTM, it offered the Bachelor of Science and Education (Islamic Studies) programme. This eventually led to the formation of the Faculty of Islamic Civilisation in 2009, which began offering the Master of Philosophy (Halal Science) and Doctor of Philosophy (Fiqh of Science and Technology) programmes in 2010. Postgraduate programmes at the Master’s and PhD levels were also introduced in 2011.
On 1st July 2018, the Faculty of Islamic Civilisation was merged under the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, which consists of the School of Education, School of Human Resource Management, Language Academy, Academy of Islamic Civilisation, and CASIS.
The Academy of Islamic Civilisation is currently located at T07 and is led by a Chairperson with 32 academic staff members at UTM Johor Bahru and 5 at UTM Kuala Lumpur.
